Melanoma Treatment
Currently, there are few therapeutic options for metastatic melanoma. PROLEUKIN (aldesleukin) for injection therapy is one treatment for metastatic melanoma currently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration.
PROLEUKIN Therapy
PROLEUKIN is an immunotherapy agent that activates the body's own immune system to recognize and eliminate certain kinds of cancer cells. Results of PROLEUKIN therapy clinical trials have shown that in 6% (17/270) of patients with metastatic melanoma treated with PROLEUKIN, tumors completely disappeared. In these patients where tumors completely disappeared, the responses lasted of a median duration of at least 4.9 years.
PROLEUKIN therapy may not be appropriate for all patients. Results also vary among patients. Other options to treat your metastatic melanoma
Always work with your doctor to discuss the therapeutic options available to treat your metastatic melanoma. In addition to the therapies described above, you might also be offered the chance to participate in a clinical trial studying an experimental drug or a combination of older drugs not yet approved for use in treating metastatic melanoma. Each option should be considered carefully.
Some individuals may choose not to receive any treatment at all. Supportive (or palliative) care can be provided to help control certain symptoms or pain associated with metastatic melanoma.
