The American Skin Cancer Foundation has provided some guidelines for judging a mole. The chart below outlines how to check the ABCDs of melanoma:
Consult with a physician if you have a mole or lesion that matches any of these conditions.

A Asymmetry: Draw an imaginary line down the middle of the patch. One half of it has a different shape than the other half. |

B Border irregularity: The border around the patch is oddly shaped and irregular. |

C Color variation: Different colors can be seen in different parts of the patch. Colors may include shades of tan and brown, black, and sometimes white, red, or blue. |

D Diameter: The patch is larger in diameter than the end of a pencil (6 mm diameter). |
