Kidney Cancer Stages
Healthcare professionals have created a kidney cancer staging scale to identify the best treatment method in each individual case. The staging scale divides kidney cancer into four stages, based on how far the cancer has spread from the primary lesion.

Treatment at the earlier stages of kidney cancer significantly improves a patient's chance for survival. Nephrectomy or surgery is currently the only effective therapy for localized kidney cancer (Stages I, II, and III). The further the cancer spreads beyond the area where it originated, the more difficult it is to treat. In 30% to 50% of patients, first diagnosis occurs after kidney cancer has metastasized (Stage IV disease).
